The Korean Institute of Criminology hosted the Second Regional Meeting on Crime and Criminal Justice Statistics on November 14-16, at the Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel. The meeting was jointly organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC) and the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ). Representatives from national statistical agencies and institutions involved in the production and use of data on crime and criminal justice from 22 countries of the Asia-Pacific region attended the meeting. Also, representatives from international organizations involved in the field of statistics on crime, security, access to justice, and rule of law participated in the meeting. The main objectives of the meeting were: to review the recent progress of crime and criminal justice statistics collected, produced, and used by countries of the region; to discuss new statistical requirements deriving from SDGs and to understand how international standards, such as the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS), can support the countries in this process; to discuss the organizational and institutional arrangements to produce crime and criminal justice data, exchange information on national practices and review how the UN-CTS can better support countries; and to discuss options on a possible Center of Excellence (CoE) on statistics on crime and criminal justice in Asia-Pacific.
