KIC Hosted the 28th CCPCJ Side-Event

On 22 May 2019, the Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC), for the first time, co-hosted a side-event with the European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control (HEUNI) on "Addressing Hate Crimes against Refugees and Immigrants in Europe and Asia-Pacific" during the 28th session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice(CCPCJ) in Vienna, Austria. The objectives of this event was to gauge the actual extent of hate crimes motivated by prejudice against and intolerance towards refugees and immigrants and identify possible legal and policy solutions that can promote respect, safety, and dignity of the vulnerable groups. Participants to the event discussed such dynamics against hate crimes on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, and nationality in Europe and Asia-Pacific. The event was intended for hate crime prevention and criminal justice professionals and experts from government agencies, international and regional organizations, research institutes and diplomatic representatives. The moderator for the event was Mr. Ilias Chatzis, Chief of the Human Trafficking and Migrants Smuggling Section of United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). Dr. Ji Sun Kim, Senior Research Fellow of Korean Institute of Criminology (KIC) made a presentation on “Addressing Hate Crimes against Immigrants in Korea”. Dr. Rick Brown, Deputy Director of Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) also made a presentation on “From Captain Cook to Christchurch: Addressing Hate Crimes in Australia”. Dr. Jenita Rauta, Researcher of Police University College, Finland presented “Suspected hate crimes reported to police in Finland”.
